On Sunday, Jared, Penny and I took a ride (really 3) on the ferry! The Ice Age Trail crosses Lake Wisconsin on the Merrimac Ferry. We parked at the wayside on the Columbia County side of Lake Wisconsin and crossed over to the Sauk County side. Penny was not a fan of the ferry. I thought she might like it because she loves boat rides up north. She was a little scared of the walkway to get on the ferry and didn’t want to get off. I forgot to take a picture of the ferry, so follow the link to the DOT website to see the ferry and learn more about it!
Once in Sauk County, we had a short road walk and then we were on the Merrimac Segment. I wore my pack again, this time with the sleeping pad. At first when I picked up my pack it felt heavier. It took a little adjusting to get comfortable again. There were some hills, but nothing too steep. There were also some boardwalks, including one that was pretty new. It was a grey day again, but luckily we didn’t get rained on.
The hike was only a little over 5 miles. I had gone on a 15 mile bike ride that morning and I didn’t want to be too sore after two days of hiking with a heavy pack. Luckily I did not feel sore or tired after the two days. Even on Monday I felt pretty good, so I think I will be fine for the Appalachian Trail trip in May!
